The Man Who Makes the Pizza Dough Fly

Pizzeria del Corso, on Avenue U in Marine Park, Brooklyn, has good food and a lively local clientele – but watch out for the flying pizza dough.

The owner, Nino Coniglio, 24, makes all the pizza himself, and he handles the dough like a Harlem Globetrotter. He can spin it high overhead and whip it over his shoulders, behind his back and between his legs. He can lie on his back behind the counter of the crowded pizzeria and keep the pie spinning aloft, looking like a mix between a break-dancer and a Frisbee champ. This is to say nothing about his leaps and two-pies-at-once skills.

This is a man who used to perform pie-spinning in subway stations, backed by a band. He was able to perform on the street after obtaining floppy rubber “practice” pizza-dough disks, which resemble a pie-in-the-making.

Mr. Coniglio speaks fondly of watching pizza men toss dough when he was a kid, but he laments that many pizza makers no longer toss dough, and he hopes to revive the practice of tossing pizza in Brooklyn.

“These days, it’s like, nobody loves it anymore,” he said. “It’s just these guys, they get a job, they don’t take it seriously. A few places here and there are keeping it old school, but it’s a dying breed.”

Mr. Coniglio, who has worked in pizza shops since he was 12, gained exposure after making the United States Pizza Team and traveling to competitions abroad. Then last year, he opened Pizzeria del Corso.

His pizza mentor is Domenico DeMarco, 71, whose pizza shop on Avenue J in Midwood is an institution. Mr. DeMarco, who has had the shop since 1964, makes more than 100 pizzas a day himself. He makes each pie with three different cheeses, and he grates his own Parmesan for each pie. He uses ordinary scissors to cut a sheaf of fresh basil over the top, before drizzling virgin olive oil onto the bubbling pie while it’s in the box.

Mr. Coniglio stopped in to see Mr. DeMarco the other day, to regale him with his latest competitive pizza-tossing exploits. Mr. DeMarco spars with his dough at chest level, but he does not throw it anymore.

“It’s something you do when you’re a young man,” he said.

Two men at the counter said they had just traveled from New Jersey to eat Mr. DeMarco’s pizza, and a woman sitting nearby, waiting for a pie, heard them and said, “I moved here from Tennessee for this pizza.”

“Dom’s a legend,” Mr. Coniglio said. “If I could be like him one day, you know what I’m saying, I could die easy.”

Here's the setup... A girls high school team tells their coach that if he hits a half court shot, he'll win tickets to the NCAA Final 4. The catch is that he will be blindfolded. What the coach doesn't know is that they told the crowd when he misses the shot, to pretend like he made it. Good prank to get him all excited that he won. Well, they should of known better about this former walk on Kansas U basketball player... Watch.

A man today hijacked a big rig and tore down Interstate 75 in Atlanta. Meanwhile the owner of the rig hung onto the back of the truck for dear life. The owner eventually jumped off the back of the tractor-trailer, eating serious pavement, after spike strips were able to slow it down enough for the dramatic escape.

One Colorado woman's love for tofu has been judged X-rated by state officials.

Kelly Coffman-Lee wanted to tell the world about her fondness for bean curd by picking certain letters for her SUV's license plate. Her suggestion for the plate: "ILVTOFU." But the Division of Motor Vehicles blocked her plan because they thought the combination of letters could be interpreted as profane.

Says Department of Revenue spokesman Mark Couch: "We don't allow 'FU' because some people could read that as street language for sex."

Officials meet periodically to ensure state plates stay free of letters that abbreviate gang slang, drug terms or obscene phrases.

The 38-year-old Coffman-Lee says tofu is a staple of her family's diet because they are vegan and that the DMV misinterpreted her message.
